Dangers of Using Public WiFi: 7 Things to Be Aware

Public WiFi

We are often using public WiFi, in various places in the country and abroad. But doing something like this while using the internet can cause various dangers.

Nowadays one cannot find any place or hotel-restaurant which does not have Wi-Fi. Large public and private offices, university campuses or shopping malls, and even open places for sightseeing have Wi-Fi systems. If you have a smartphone, tab or laptop, you can jump into the deep sea of the Internet with just one password. Many places can connect to the Internet without a password. Needless to say, we call such Wi-Fi as public Wi-Fi.

But while this connection is very convenient, using public Wi-Fi can lead to unintended dangers if some things are not taken care of or done without knowledge. The Internet—fraud, data theft, cybercrime—is now threatening social security as well as financial loss, becoming deadly. Therefore, Internet and cyber criminologists strongly advise against doing certain things when using public Wi-Fi.

Automatic or connect automatically

As soon as the phone or laptop detects Wi-Fi, it will ask if you want to connect to it automatically. This check box should never be ticked. Experts say, if you get automatic connection, hackers and internet thugs will find you very easily.

Connecting to free Wi-Fi

We are reluctant to use mobile data for internet for fear of cost. Meanwhile, if you get free Wi-Fi and connect to it without thinking ahead, you may have to get into trouble. Scammers and hackers can keep up with free Wi-Fi. So it is foolish to jump into any connection without being sure.

Conduct financial transactions

Internet banking or tax filing—doing these things over free Wi-Fi is shooting yourself in the foot. Thus if the card details, TIN number or personal information goes to the criminal, you may have to pay the price for life.

Entering important site passwords

Good public Wi-Fi without having to enter username and password to access important sites like this. Here the information can be leaked before the encryption is done to trap the hackers.

Shopping online

Don’t get carried away by a ‘crazy’ offer like a sudden bet. Back home only with your own Wi-Fi or if absolutely necessary, use data to do online shopping or order something. There have been many cases where ‘key logging’ software is installed on Wi-Fi and then someone steals money from the credit card.

Log in to your account on the office website

In this age of internet we can now do office work from anywhere. But it is very dangerous to access your account on the office website or where there is sensitive information. Using business e-mail, customer communication tools or accounting software in this way can cause irreparable damage to yourself, the organization or the company.

Automatic file sharing

This can never be done using public Wi-Fi. In this way, if you want to share files by establishing a link with other devices, there may be a lot of trouble. Malware can enter the device. The risk of virus attack cannot be ruled out. In the end, the expensive phone or laptop of the hobby will be lost.
